Movie Review – The Real Dirt on Farmer John

Posted on Saturday, 8th May 2010 by 2M

Morton submits this review of the independent film The Real Dirt on Farmer John:

I was given this documentary by Andy Grant the organic farmer in Ft. Collins who befriended me, David Meltzer and Michael while we were in Ft. Collins.

He gave it to me a long time ago and I just saw it.

I am going to get more copies and hope/wish/strongly urge you to see this with your families. Children will understand it and I think it is accurate, funny, sad, wildly human about what has happened to family farms in the USA over time AND where they are now headed with organics, CSA and biodynamic farming.

This is very important to the USA, to our family and anyone vaguely interested in the future value system of food in the USA.

The Man and The Music

Posted on Saturday, 1st May 2010 by 2M

WFAA’s special on Jaap van Zweden, Morton, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center The Man and the Music, is embedded below. Morton enjoyed the special and wanted everyone who may have missed it to be able to view it.

The special includes Gary Cogill, WFAA’s Arts and Entertainment reporter, interviewing Morton and Jaap about the Dallas Symphony and the Symphony Center. At one point, Cogill asks Jaap if there is anything he would change about the hall. Jaap quickly responds “no!, nothing.” Morton talks about how a great concert hall is for everyone, saying, “this isn’t an elitist place, classical music was and is a music of the people, and that’s what’s needed in Dallas, and I think that we’ve fulfilled our mission in trying to bring that there. We must continue to educate our children and give access to those people that can’t afford it, or we will just be another elite organization that doesn’t make any sense.”

Movie Review – The Art of the Steal

Posted on Thursday, 8th April 2010 by 2M

Morton went to see The Art of the Steal over the weekend and sent us his thoughts:

I went to see this movie with my parents this afternoon. Mother wanted to see it and Dad went along for the ride (in his wheelchair) and seemed to appreciate it. I was stunned. I had read the reviews and wasn’t that turned on and would have passed, BUT my inadvertent viewing came because I thought I should be with my parents on this joint outing. It turned out to be a stunning documentary.

Rotten Tomatoes has it at 81% but said it was one sided. I don’t think it was one sided and I felt, based on my experiences in NYC in the 1970’s, that huge money creates strange bed fellows. I was very moved and distressed by what happened to Dr. Barnes’ magnificent collection and how Pennsylvania, 3 foundations, the governor of PA, the mayor of Philly and numerous people who had a reason to want to get control of a collection valued at over $45B, yes B.

It is sickening and the film was really well done.

Try it, you will appreciate it.

Bach & Friends Premiere Announced

Posted on Monday, 22nd March 2010 by 2M

We just got word from director Michael Lawrence that Bach & Friends will premier on Sebastian Bach’s 325th Birthday, Sunday, May 16 in Symphony Space’s Peter Jay Sharp Theatre. The screening will be open to the public, so be there for the screening at 7:30pm followed by a screening of the full performances from the film.

In addition to the outstanding reviews we linked to before, additional reviews from The Washington Post and The Huffington Post have been posted. Michael Lawrence is compiling a full list of reviews and comments on the film.

Greg Victor over at Parcbench.com says it well in his 4/4 stars review: “And so I wish Bach a Happy 325th Birthday by singing the praises of Michael Lawrence for bringing us as close to the music as he can, without entering the instruments themselves. His camera glides along the cellist or violinist, mirroring the bow on the strings. The subtle, yet important, momentary choices made by a pianist’s fingers on the keyboard are seen from mere inches away. Making Bach’s music is clearly as much of a mystical experience as listening to it.”
